Holiday Tummy Bugs: Prevention and What to Do
Stomach upsets are among the most common holiday illnesses. Here is how to lower your risk and what to do if one strikes.
Tummy bugs are especially common in hot weather, when food and drinks stay warm for longer. Wash your hands before eating, choose food that is freshly cooked and served hot, and drink sealed or bottled water.
If you do fall ill, sip oral rehydration solution (available at pharmacies) little and often, eat plain foods when you feel able, and rest. Avoid alcohol while you recover.
Get medical help if you see blood in your stool, cannot keep fluids down, have signs of dehydration such as dizziness or very dark urine, or if symptoms last more than a few days. Babies, young children, pregnant women and older adults should be assessed sooner.
