Travel guide to Kadikoy
Kadikoy was ancient Chalcedon, long before the old peninsula across the water grew. Tourist tip: take the ferry from Eminonu, graze the fish and produce market and stroll Moda’s seafront; Bagdat Caddesi nearby is the main fashion street.
How on-duty pharmacies work in Turkey
- Some medicines are sold only with a prescription, and controlled substances need a physical prescription.
- Bring your passport, cash or a card, and your old medicine packaging.
- Pharmacies (eczane) are marked with a red E sign.
- A rota decides which pharmacy in each district stays open overnight, on Sundays and on public holidays. This is the on-duty pharmacy.
- Pharmacists can advise on minor problems such as mild stomach upsets, insect bites and sunburn.
- The on-duty pharmacy may be in a neighbouring district, so a taxi can be useful at night.
What to bring to the pharmacy
- Your e-prescription on your phone, or a printout.
- Cash or a card; some pharmacies prefer cash at night.
- A note of allergies and other medicines you take.
- The address of your accommodation, in case the pharmacist requires to confirm your details.
- Your passport, because the prescription is linked to your passport number.

When Kadikoy is at its busiest, long nights and short sleep make even a small infection feel worse, so rest and water matter as much as medicine.
